Sunderland one of three clubs linked with loan move for ‘£100m-rated’ Premier League striker in January

If Sunderland are lacking one thing right now, it’s a goalscorer, but the Black Cats are now being linked with a top Premier League talent who could fix that.

After a bright start to the season, Sunderland hit a patch of inconsistency that has seen them lose top spot in the Championship.

Still, two wins and a draw in their last three has kept Regis Le Bris’ side right in contention in the promotion battle.

Now, as we approach the start of the January transfer window, Sunderland fans are demanding a new striker be signed, and it could be the difference between getting promotion and staying in the second tier next season.

Sunderland move could be on the cards for Evan Ferguson

Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson is now reportedly on Sunderland’s radar, with a loan deal looking more and more possible in the New Year, writes The Scotsman.

The only problem is that Sunderland would have to beat both Leeds United and Celtic to Ferguson’s signature, with all three clubs cited as potential destinations for the Republic of Ireland international.

Ferguson was once regarded as a ‘£100m-rated‘ talent but has found game time hard to come by at Brighton this season and he is now thought to be ready to leave in January to get his fledgling career back on track.

Evan Ferguson could make all the difference for Sunderland in promotion race

If Sunderland could win the race to sign Ferguson, he has the potential to turn the Championship title race on its head.

We’ve seen enough of Ferguson in the top flight to know that this is a player who can be prolific in front of goal. Drop him down a division, and he could be an absolute cheat code for whoever signs him.

It’s a similar situation to Sunderland’s interest in Louie Barry from Aston Villa, wherein the club could end up with the kind of attacking talent that can almost singlehandedly fire them to promotion.

Add someone like Ferguson — who can score a range of different goals in and around the box — to the highly-creative Sunderland squad, and you’ve got a recipe for an abundance of goals.

Goals win football matches, and historically, any team wishing to make it out of the Championship has always had a talismanic striker to steer them in the right direction.
