The government has decreed a price freeze on certain consumer products
Prices blocked in Mayotte. The government published a decree in the Official Journal on Thursday to block the prices of consumer products on the Indian Ocean archipelago, declared in a state of “exceptional natural calamity” after the passage of Cyclone Chido, at their levels reached on December 13 last year.
According to the Commercial Code, consumer products include:
- Food products and non-alcoholic drinks
- Alcoholic drinks
- Electric batteries for all uses
- Washing and maintenance products.
- Cleaning items
- Paper items such as filters, tablecloths and napkins, kitchen paper, vacuum cleaner bags and cardboard tableware, including aluminum foil and plastic trash bags.
- Adhesive or non-adhesive dressings.
- Pet food.
- Non-electric appliances such as razors and their blades, nail files, toothbrushes, excluding mechanical clippers and their blades, scissors, combs, shaving brushes, hairbrushes, nailbrushes, hairpins, curlers, scales -people, baby scales.
- Personal hygiene items
- Beauty products, perfumes and deodorants
- Other products such as toilet paper, facial tissues, paper napkins, sanitary tampons, hydrophilic cotton, cotton swabs, disposable baby diapers, toilet sponges.
Construction products and materials, as well as electrical equipment and tools are also affected by the decree, the text specifies.
Wholesale, retail, online
The text came into force upon its publication overnight and is valid for wholesale, retail, online sales but also production sales prices as well as import margins “and at all stages of distribution of the products concerned. Prices cannot be “higher, all taxes included, than those reached on December 13, 2024 or, failing that, on the nearest earlier date, for each establishment in Mayotte”.
The decree offers the prefect of Mayotte the possibility of setting by decree maximum prices “applicable to all establishments in the same category of businesses”, based on average prices observed before the cyclone in a representative sample of establishments. .
