Player Ratings: Newcastle United 3 Brentford 1 – Sandro Tonali stars

NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):

7 Dubravka: Didn’t have a lot to do, but got his timing just right as he dived in to claw the ball away from Wissa in the first half

7 Deliverance: A strong display in both defence and attack from a player who has been quietly excellent in the last few weeks

8 flock: Dominant in defence, shackling the Brentford attack, and in the right place at the right time to turn home Newcastle’s third goal – booking means he’ll miss the first leg of the semi though

7 Burn: Won whatever was sent his way in the air and was always in the right position to deal with Brentford’s attacking

8 Hall: Keeps on getting better and better – a real threat from open play and also now an architect of some inventive set-pieces

7 Guimaraes: His performances in his new role are improving, and he is turning into the perfect foil for Tonali – like Schar, though, with miss the first leg of the semi-final

9 TONALS: He was excellent against Leicester at the weekend, but this was even better – scored two goals and was the best player on the pitch by a distance

6 Joelinton: Gave his all in the first half, but wasn’t able to recover from being trodden on and failed to reappear after the break

7 Murphy: Another strong showing that saw him hit the post and curl a decent second-half effort just past the post

7 Isak: Didn’t really have a clear-cut opening, but still put in an excellent shift, leading the line and pulling around the Brentford defence

7 Gordon: Came close with a couple of efforts that whistled just the post – looks infinitely happier back on the left-hand side

Subs:

7 Willock (for Joelinton, 46): Helped keep Newcastle on the front foot in the second half – will presumably start at Ipswich on Saturday in place of the suspended Joelinton

7 Barnes (for Murphy, 64): Looked sharp in the final half-hour and cracked a decent effort against the base of the post

Osula (for Isak, 77)

Trippier (for Hall, 77)

Almiron (for Gordon, 77)

(not used): Vlachodimos (gk), Targett, Kelly, Miley.

BRENTFORD (3-5-2):

Spot 4; Collins 3, May 4, Pinnock 5 (Roerslev 14, 5); Ajer 4, Yarmoliuk 4, Janelt 5 (Mbeumo 61, 5), Carvalho 4 (Damsgaard 61, 5), Lewis-Potter 4 (Meghoma 73); Damage 4 (Maghoma 73), WARN 5.

Subs (not used): Valdimarsson (gk), Konak, Trevitt.

Man Of The Match: SANDRO TONALI – In the last two matches, the Italian has shown exactly why Newcastle were so willing to shell out £55m to sign him from AC Milan.
