Newcastle United booked themselves a place in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 win over Brentford at St James’ Park.
The first-half was rather nervy, and Newcastle United struggled to get a foothold in the game.
It was two moments of brilliance from Sandro Tonali that really separated the two sides in the first-half, as he grabbed a brace, which included a wonderful finish from outside the area for the first.
There were plenty of rumours about Tonali’s future floating around earlier on this week, but many of them were rubbished and the Italian’s actions on the field certainly don’t suggest he’ll be going anywhere.
Newcastle United fans will be hoping he stays put, as they took to social media during the Brentford clash to voice their opinion on his performance.
Newcastle United fans react to Sandro Tonali’s display vs Brentford in the Carabao Cup
These Newcastle United fans, when speaking on X, all loved Tonali playing in the six position.
@adbtlr wants him at the six forever: “Tonali is an exceptional football player. He has cemented his position as the number 6 for us. Has to be undroppable now.”
@Nufc2Everything mentioned: “Sandro Tonali has come into his elite game the last two matches. He as a 6 in this system is absolutely outstanding. THE CONDUCTOR!”
@DanBurnFC commented: “Tonali could be the second-best 6 it uno 2-0, so let’s keep at it.”
Sandro Tonali’s performance in numbers against Brentford
Sandro Tonali put in one of his best performances of the season, which saw him grab a brace.
He had 55 touches, a passing accuracy of 91%, scored two goals, completed one long ball, completed his only dribble, won four duels, was fouled once, made one clearance and made two tackles (SofaScore).
Eddie Howe certainly won’t think about dropping Tonali anytime soon if injuries stay away, as the midfielder has been simply sensational over the last couple of games.
These are the kind of performances that will really increase Newcastle United’s stance on not allowing him to leave in the January transfer window.
