In the so-called “Bismuth wiretapping” affair, the former President of the Republic therefore lost. But is this defeat his or that of a judicial system which did not guarantee fundamental freedoms?
We have never before seen a former President of the Republic in France file a complaint against his country! This has been done since Wednesday. Nicolas Sarkozy, sure of his “perfect innocence”, asks the European Court of Human Rights to do him justice. He has, in fact, just been convicted of corruption and influence peddling. Accusations with infamous qualifications for a matter which did not take place: obtaining judicial information concerning him against the promotion of a French magistrate in Monaco. Accusations mounted by the judicial machine based on telephone tapping violating the rights of the defense. Accusations which now earn him a prison number and 1 year of detention, certainly transformed into wearing an electronic bracelet. This is also a first for the former head of a great democracy like France! Before him, in 2011, Jacques Chirac was sentenced to 2 years in prison.
