Fall in the PEL rate, registration documents sent in continuous letters… Economic news in 120 seconds

The rate of new housing savings plans (PEL) will fall to 1.75% gross (1.45% net maximum) from January 1, 2025, compared to 2.25% currently. This drop results from the calculation formula based on “swap” rates, which will decline in 2024. In comparison, the Livret A remains more attractive, at 3%. The borrowing rate linked to the PEL will also be reduced, from 3.45% to 2.95%. PELs opened before 2025 will retain their initial rate.

From January 2, 2025, registration documents will no longer be sent by registered mail but by letter followed directly into the mailbox of new vehicle owners. This measure aims to reduce public spending while maintaining proof of distribution. If the system proves effective after one year, it will definitely be adopted. The dematerialization of the registration document, as for the driving license, remains an option to consider.

Faced with the high cost of heat pumps (10,000 to 18,000 euros), rental offers are emerging, inspired by car leasing. Households could pay monthly rent including installation, maintenance and repairs, rather than buying. According to a study, 75% of French people would favor rental for its economic advantage. However, the success of these offers will depend on their cost, essential to convince consumers, and which remains to be clarified by manufacturers.

Payment in installments, attractive for end-of-year purchases, is used by 70% of French people, particularly for household appliances or high-tech products. However, it carries risks: it is not regulated like consumer credit and can worsen over-indebtedness. Without a prior solvency study or right of withdrawal, late payment penalties can reach 30 or even 40%. Always check the associated fees before committing.
