A descent of polar air is expected in France, a few days before Christmas. But does this indicate truly winter conditions?
For this weekend, agitation returns with the passage of rainy and windy disturbances Initially, it will be mild on Thursday but cold air will then arrive. Does this indicate winter conditions for Christmas in France?
Air of maritime polar origin
From this Thursday afternoon, we will find colder air over France. This will also promote lower temperatures tomorrow afternoon than in the morning.
This cold air will be followed by a slight warm spell on Saturday. However, a further drop in temperatures is expected by Sunday and Monday. Indeed, the anticyclonic zone present over the Atlantic will generate a flow from the northwest to the north.
By next Monday, cold air will reach the whole of France with values of around -5°C around 1500m altitude. Good news for the different ski resorts.
Regarding temperatures near the ground, these are often expected to be slightly positive. Expect a low of 0°C to 1°C over a good northeast quarter by Tuesday morning.
The risk of frost is therefore limited in the plains, although it could occur if nighttime clearings occur. We will have time to come back to it as the weather forecasts evolve.
A risk of snow in the plains?
By this weekend, further disruptions are expected. While rain will dominate until Saturday, the presence of even colder air on Sunday could increase the risk of showers. Good snowfall will affect the different reliefs of eastern France.
Sleet sometimes in the form of snow alone in Champagne-Ardenne, Lorraine and Alsaceparticularly during the evening and night from Sunday to Monday. Of course the exact chronology still requires a little patience in view of the deadline.
That being said, winter conditions are expected just a few days before Christmas. The risk of these flakes remaining in the plain remains limited and at most temporary. In fact, temperatures will often remain slightly positive.
Between now and Christmas Day, the anticyclone will assert itself even more over France. Predominant clouds to be expected with temperatures generally close to normal.
As a reminder, white Christmases in the plains are rather infrequent. We have to go back to December 2010 to find many regions under a sometimes thick layer of snow on Christmas Day.
