Eindhoven December 17. Although it was a cup match between PSV and Koninklijke HFC, the tickets flew over the counter like delicious sandwiches, because no fewer than 34,800 fans attended the match, including an armada of HFC sympathizers (1,400). With nine coaches and four double-deckers they headed south in unison.
A chronological account:
4:45 p.m. The stadium square is already very busy two hours in advance. “Eindhoven, the craziest,” a PSV fan clearly shouts under the influence to anyone who will listen. The tone has been set!
6 p.m. “A bit of a delay, but we’re on time,” reports bus driver Walter Steenvoorden, dressed in a neat HFC sweater in the press area.
6.10 pm: “We made a nice item at Koninklijke HFC on Saturday. The entrance tickets were collected and special scarves purchased by the supporters,” said Frank van der Meijden of RTV Noord-Holland Nieuws.
6:15 p.m. “We provide broadcasts on behalf of Eyecons and attend every HFC home match. Really fun to do. We have a lot of freedom and regularly make funny and sometimes bad jokes. What will it be tonight? Win 0-1 and then away against Ajax,” jokes commentator Ties and his sidekicks/companions Gijs and Kasper, three students who all act at HFC.
6:45 p.m. The teams enter the field and almost 35,000 fans almost clap their hands. The Royal starts very brutally, but at the first PSV opportunity the home team scores.
7:00 PM. After just five minutes, Lozano capitalized on the first opportunity and a few minutes later two goals were added. An unfortunate own goal by Mitchel Michaelis and a lucky goal by Ricardo Pepi.
7:20 PM. Guus Til also grabbed his goal and put the 4-0 halftime score on the scoreboard.
7:35 pm. However, the three Eyecons men do not give up hope. “Still possible, perhaps with penalties,” the student-like troika jokes with wonderful irony and self-mockery.
Courageous HFC leaves many opportunities unused.
8:00/8:30 PM. An extremely sporty HFC (4 fouls!) sees no chance to convert three imposed chances, because Joel Drommel emphatically refuses to cooperate. An own goal from Ruben Heeremans and another from Pepi lifts the score to a more or less acceptable end result (6-0), but two goals from the Croatian Ivan Perisic in the absolute final phase leads to a rather high 8-0 punishment. .
9 p.m. On to the press conference! “This is a childhood dream for me. The icing on the cake, but 8-0 is a lot, right? It’s a shame that we didn’t capitalize on our chances, but this is a special evening for us,” analyzed Wessel Boer, who treated the news to a few tasty one-liners. “I could still enjoy the atmosphere until 4-0, but after that the score rose too high in my opinion. To compress! Especially because of shit goals from them,” said HFC closing post Mitchel Michaelis, who experienced the match with mixed feelings.
9:10 p.m. The quote of the week, however, came from two elderly HFC fans who were dragged in front of the camera by ESPN afterwards. “PSV’s victory is of course justified, but also flattering. We shot no fewer than 13 times on target and should have scored at least three times. A beautiful evening, by the way, but we are dissatisfied with one aspect. We stood high at the corner flag and had to look through a net. Look, we are decent people from Heemstede and we did not deserve this,” the duo concluded correctly, to the point and in style.
