Royal HFC lost by a large margin to PSV (8-0) in the Philips Stadium on Tuesday, but the players enjoyed the experience. This certainly also applied to defender Wessel Boer, who was met with laughter at the press conference afterwards.
Boer was deployed as Ricardo Pepi’s guard, who gave his shirt to the defender afterwards. When asked, Boer started the song for the PSV striker (see video below). ‘Two goals? I thought he made four! Oh, no, two goals indeed, and twice I’m not in the right place. I blame myself for that.’

Boer had an explanation for it: the defender has just returned from an injury. ‘When PSV emerged, I only had one objective and that was to be able to play this match on behalf of HFC. I did everything I could and planned it out perfectly for myself. I’m just not one hundred percent fit yet; otherwise Pepi wouldn’t have made one and I would have gotten another shirt. But I still have Pepi’s shirt, so that says enough.’
Just before half time, Boer almost managed to score. He had a great header opportunity when he was 4-0 behind. ‘Yes, and heading, that’s my favorite thing to do. I prefer to head rather than play with my feet,” laughed Boer. ‘I’ll have some nightmares about that. Maybe that goal would have been the reason to make it 4-4, but it was not to be.’
HFC also had some chances in the second half. “If it had been 4-4 in the second half, it would have been deserved,” Boer believed. ‘Great opportunities, it’s a real shame that we weren’t able to cheer with all the fans from Haarlem who traveled with us. That seems crazy in advance and it certainly could have happened today. Unfortunately.’

“All in all, it was a life experience and a boyhood dream,” Boer continued. ‘As an amateur football player, it couldn’t be better than an evening like this. The result is a bit flattering, the footballer in me says: 8-0, you never want that. Too bad, but I will take this with me for the rest of my life. That is very valuable and the most important thing today.’
The eloquent Boer had a good time in the press room and made his best statement when HFC’s strong start was discussed. ‘Yes, we were lord and master for the first five minutes. There is laughter, but it is true. I’m going to watch the game again and think I’ll replay the first five minutes a few more times, because we were in a good place. And then you’re also impressed, dude. It was just really nice to be able to experience this once.’
