18th December 2024 – (Winnipeg) Kevin He, an 18-year-old forward hailing from Beijing, has etched his name in NHL history by becoming the first Chinese-born player to secure an entry-level contract with the Winnipeg Jets.
He’s journey to the NHL began when he was selected 109th overall in the fourth round of this year’s NHL Draft by the Jets, following a strategic trade with Buffalo that propelled them up 14 spots to acquire him.
Expressing his elation at the opportunity, He described the experience as a dream come true and a tremendous honour to be chosen by the Jets. Currently honing his skills in the junior ranks with Niagara in the Ontario Hockey League, He has exhibited impressive stats with 23 goals and 20 assists across 29 games.
Jets’ general manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff, commended He’s pride in his heritage and dedication to his craft, highlighting the significance of diversity in the sport and the potential to further expand hockey’s reach.
As the NHL leaders this season with a remarkable 45 points from 22 wins, nine losses, and one overtime loss, the Jets are setting a high standard in the league.
He’s journey into hockey commenced at a young age when his father introduced him to skating at the age of four. Subsequently, he delved into organized hockey at six after relocating to Montreal. At the age of 12, He’s family moved to Toronto, providing him with opportunities to participate in elite youth leagues, eventually leading to his selection by Niagara in the 2022 junior draft.
While He now holds the distinction of being the first Chinese-born player to sign an NHL entry-level contract, it’s worth noting that Andong Song was the first China-born player selected in the NHL Draft by the New York Islanders in the sixth round, 172nd overall, during the 2015 NHL Draft, although Song did not proceed to sign an entry-level deal.
