1) Neither speak, nor breathe, nor cough
The victim cannot respond (maybe shakes his head), but is conscious. The victim cannot speak, breathe or cough. She may wheeze or try to cough without making a sound.
2) 5 slaps
Give the victim a maximum of 5 slaps on the back. After each slap, check if everything is in order.
3) 5 abdominal compressions
If back slaps have no effect, perform a maximum of 5 abdominal compressions.
Alternate slaps and compressions
If the problem is still not resolved, alternate 5 back slaps and 5 abdominal compressions.
4) If the victim loses consciousness
Place the victim gently on the ground and immediately alert the emergency services, then undertake cardiopulmonary resuscitation, starting by performing 30 chest compressions.
Continue resuscitation
Continue resuscitation until help arrives or the victim resumes normal breathing.
