PSV has qualified for the third round of the TOTO KNVB cup tournament without any problems. Peter Bosz’s team was already ahead with a margin of four goals halfway through against the amateurs of Koninklijke HFC and eventually won 8-0. HFC came close to scoring a goal a few times, but was unable to get it on the board.
HFC had surprised in the first round by eliminating FC Emmen and received a wonderful reward for this with PSV-out. The second division team, led by assistant coach Jarno Verweij in the absence of Gertjan Tamerus, was determined to really make it a match and started brutally. The first opportunity was for HFC: after good work by Xander van den Berg, Marios Lomis did not hit the ball well.
As could be expected, PSV then had possession and control. The national champion tried to take control of the match as quickly as possible and he succeeded quite well, with Hirving Lozano’s opening goal in the twelfth minute and the 2-0 in the nineteenth minute. The latter goal went down as an own goal by goalkeeper Mitchel Michaelis, after Ricardo Pepi had tried to pass the ball.
Michaelis had expressed the hope in advance that he would keep it to less than five or six goals. That mission was seriously jeopardized before halftime, when he had to fish twice more, with goals from Pepi (’31) and Guus Til (’38). PSV had opportunities for a fifth goal in the remainder of the first half, but Michaelis now stood his ground.
In the second half, just like in the first act, HFC got the first chance. PSV’s cup keeper Joël Drommel missed a cross, but was lucky that Armando Obispo was able to clear it. Then it was PSV’s turn again, which did not really feel the need to present a football show to the sold-out Philips Stadium. The Eindhoven crowd could sometimes cheer after a crazy own goal by Ruben Heeremans.
After this, HFC came close to scoring a goal of honor a few more times. However, Drommel did not let himself be passed by Levi de Wilde, Rabbi Mwenda and Maxwell Frimpong and kept his goal clean. The home team scored three more times through Pepi and Perisic (2) and PSV, which lost 1-0 to Stade Brest and SC Heerenveen last week, had a carefree run-up to the year-end closing event on Sunday. Then the Eredivisie leader awaits the competition top match against Feyenoord.
