Russian General Igor Kirillov was killed by a bomb in front of his home in Moscow this morning. He was head of the Russian NBC defense force and a prominent war propagandist.
In all likelihood, the Ukrainian secret service was behind the attack. Ukraine blames Kirillov for the repeated use of chemical weapons in Ukraine and sees him as a war criminal.
When General Kirillov and an employee stepped outside from his home in the south of the Russian capital Moscow in the morning, an explosive device that had been hidden in an electric scooter exploded. According to Russian media, the bomb was detonated remotely. Kirillov and his adjutant died.
Defamatory war propaganda
Kirillov was no stranger. In Russia, he was not only responsible for protecting against dangers posed by nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, but since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression he had also repeatedly made slanderous claims to the public.
For example, he claimed that the USA was running biological weapons laboratories in Ukraine or that Ukraine was developing a dirty bomb. But above all, Ukraine blames Kirillov for the use of chemical weapons. This involves grenades containing irritant gas or tear gas, the manufacture and use of which for military purposes is prohibited.
Trail leads to Kyiv
Russia has repeatedly stated that it has eliminated its chemical weapons. According to the Ukrainian authorities, more than 2,000 members of the Ukrainian military are said to have been injured by Russian chemical weapons. Allegations that are also made by the British Foreign Office and US authorities and which are supported by reports from wounded soldiers.
It was only on Monday that the Ukrainian secret service publicly blamed Kirillov for the 2,000 injured soldiers. A day later, Kirillov was assassinated. According to consistent reports from Ukraine, the trail leads to the Ukrainian secret service. A source in Ukrainian intelligence is said to have said Kirillov is a war criminal and therefore a legitimate target.
Ukrainian intelligence sends clear message
This is plausible because Kirillov is not the first Russian propagandist and military man to die in a suspected Ukrainian assassination attempt. Just a few days ago, a rocket developer and drone specialist was shot dead on the street in a suburb of Moscow. And in the occupied Ukrainian territories there are regular attacks on collaborators and Russian occupiers.
But it is the first time that such a high-ranking military officer has been murdered in such a sophisticated assassination attempt. And that in the middle of Moscow. The message from the Ukrainian secret service is clear: no one responsible for crimes in Ukraine or who works as a Kremlin propagandist should feel safe.
