Julianne Moore Channels ’90s Minimalism in The Row Slipdress at ‘The Room Next Door’ Premiere

Julianne Moore made the case for minimalist dressing at the premiere of “The Room Next Door” on Monday. The Oscar-winning actress costars with Tilda Swinton in Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film.

Moore donned a draped bias cut The Row slipdress, accessorizing with nude open-toe heels and Ana Khouri jewelry, including a pair of pearl statement earrings and chunky gold rings. She was assisted by stylist Kate Young, who also counts Dakota Johnson, Nina Dobrev and Michelle Williams as clients.

Hairdresser Halley Brisker styled Moore’s auburn tresses in a middle part, while makeup artist Kay Montano gave her a mauve lip, winged eyeliner and rosy blush.

On the red carpet, Moore posed with both Swinton and Almodóvar — the former sported a black silk top with matching trousers, while the latter wore a pale blue suit with a hot pink turtleneck.

1990s minimalism has seen a resurgence in 2024 following the viral “quiet luxury” trend. The pared-down aesthetic refers to the sleek designs of Calvin Klein, Helmut Lang and Jil Sander, whose clean lines, neutral palettes and flattering silhouettes defined the decade.

Moore’s gown resembled Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s wedding dress, designed by her close friend Narciso Rodriguez. Bessette-Kennedy is widely regarded as a pioneer of ’90s minimalism, and her silk crepe sheath with a cowl neckline upended the popularity of princessy, puff-sleeve brides, ushering in the craze for simplistic, slip-style wedding gowns.

Following the Kennedy wedding, Rodriguez’s career soared. In 1997, he left his post at Cerruti and launched his own namesake label.

Bessette-Kennedy’s gown also inspired one of Meghan Markle’s wedding day looks: specifically her halter neck Stella McCartney reception dress.
