The VAR has been severely criticized in the Netherlands in recent weeks, but is sorely missed in the TOTO KNVB Cup match between PSV and the Royal HFC. PSV striker Ricardo Pepi appeared to have been offside when making the 3-0, but the goal was ‘normally’ approved due to the lack of a VAR.
PSV completely overcame the HFC amateurs in the opening phase of the match. In the 31st minute, Pepi scored the third Eindhoven goal. The American was put one-on-one by Hirving Lozano, first shot at goalkeeper Mitchel Michaelis, but luckily got the ball and was able to finish it easily.
In the repetition the op ESPN was shown that Pepi was narrowly offside when Lozano’s pass came. However, the assistant referee did not flag. There is no VAR at this stage of the cup tournament, which is why the offside goal was left standing.
ESPN introduces something completely new live during the match: an interview with supporters in the stands. A number of HFC fans immediately noticed that the goal should not have counted. “Completely offside. Doesn’t count. Worthless. No chance,” said an HFC supporter live on television, while the game was still running.
“We even saw from here that it was offside,” says another man.
