Although the weather is better on the Côte d'Azur than in the rest of France, temperatures have nonetheless dropped in recent days.
Reason enough for the City and the municipal social action center which decided to open the El Nouzah emergency night accommodation center on Wednesday December 11 for homeless men (SDF).
“It is our duty to allow anyone who wishes to protect themselves from the cold in dignified and humane reception conditions, indicates Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice. We are fortunate to have an important relay of partners which allows us to multiply the action of our services.”
Eight additional seats
The El Nouzah center, exclusively reserved for men, benefits in particular from four dormitories, toilets and showers, a room for taking meals as well as luggage storage.
Its accommodation capacity is greater than in 2023 with 8 additional places. The center now has 46 beds.
“We also pay attention to detailsbreathes the mayor of Nice. Here, two people can come with their pet.” Two rings were installed outside to tether the dogs of these temporary residents during the night.
The center receives men every day, from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. the next day. A snack is distributed to them as well as soup and breakfast.
“When we receive a person, we seek to create a reintegration pathway with the help of partner associations”continues the mayor before emphasizing the importance of having housing for “don’t fall to the wrong side”.
He develops: “We have a housing solidarity fund of 1.9 million euros which has made it possible to help 11,000 households in difficulty in 2023.”
The idea is to help them pay their electricity and water bills or simply their rent.
“If temperatures continue to drop, we will not hesitate to open the site on rue Fodéréassures Christian Estrosi. We will ensure that no one is left behind.” The winter plan would then be triggered.
The site on rue Fodéré has 49 places which would be added to the 145 accessible in the centers on rue Trachel and El Nouzah. Without forgetting the 35 beds in the Nice Foundation night stop and the 43 in the structure reserved for women (and managed by Secours Populaire).
In total, the City of Nice provides just over 270 beds when all reception facilities are open.
Last January, nearly 250 homeless people were identified during solidarity night. A night during which a census is carried out at the same time throughout France to better reflect reality.
Between those housed in the centers and those recorded in the streets of the city, Nice has around 500 people without a stable home.
