Cameron Menzies was in tears during the final stages of his shock World Championship defeat to Leonard Gates.
Gates, ranked 130th in the world, overcame Menzies 3-1 in their first round encounter at Alexandra Palace on Monday night.
The American, who was the crowd favourite on the night, displayed plenty of showmanship before a dart had even been thrown as he whipped out a full array of dance moves during his walk-on.
As for Glaswegian Menzies, he shared a heartwarming kiss with his partner and fellow darts star, Fallon Sherrock, on his way to the oche.
Gates’ antics evidently struck a chord with the crowd inside the Ally Pally, as chants of ‘USA’ echoed throughout the venue over the course of the match.
They also taunted Menzies with anti-Scotland chants and jeered him whenever he missed opportunities to win a leg or failed to land a treble.
Gates rode the wave of momentum generated by the crowd in a sensational first set in which he recorded checkouts of 138, 120 and 85 with a bullseye finish.
It looked like the American would race out to a 2-0 lead as the second set was poised at two legs apiece.
However, Menzies recovered to level the contest with a 45 checkout.
For Menzies, the tide – and the crowd – soon turned against him as his Ally Pally dream quickly turned to a nightmare.
Gates rattled off three-straight legs to take a 2-1 lead and move to one set away from victory.
Menzies showed plenty of heart to slow down Gates’ momentum as the fourth set went to a deciding fifth leg.
Unfortunately for Menzies, who is a plumber by trade, the wheels soon came off as the crowd jeered each and every missed attempt at a double or a treble.
He missed 27 of his 32 double attempts and as his game fell apart in front of the party goers inside and it quickly became too much for Menzies as cameras captured tears welling in his eyes whenever he stepped up to the oche.
In truth it was hard to watch at times as the crowd gave a player clearly struggling a hard time. He later retweeted the video of his teary finish accompanied by a post from a fan that read: ‘Scum from the crowd’.
Menzies’ partner Sherrock could only watch on as the Scot simply couldn’t hang with his rival.
Sweat was also seen pouring off the head of the 35-year-old, leaving his hair drenched.
Eventually Gates closed out the victory and hugged Menzies in a tight embrace, sharing some words of encouragement for his beaten rival.
Although it was a miserable evening for Menzies, Gates produced a scintillating performance and recorded three checkouts of 100 or more.
The American will now face Nathan Aspinall in the second round.
“It was it was very exhilarating. It’s a good feeling right now to move to the second round and play some more darts here in England,” Gates told talkSPORT after the game.
“Like I said when I was here two years ago. This is the best thing.
“If you don’t feed off that energy however, you feed off of it. I mean, you don’t need to come, you know. I mean that that’s that’s some love energy.”
Gates also revealed he gave Menzies a private show of support in the face of the boo boys at Ally Pally.
“I definitely picked up on it throughout the game and like I told him in the end, I just said use that energy. I told him I said, ‘you have a lot of darts left in you.’
“We played together in Vegas. So I know what he can do. You know when he’s feeling good and he’s had good having fun and have a good time.
“He can throw some great darts and I mean I hats off to him. You know Cameron Menzies is a great man a great opponent and I hope he keeps going.”
This was echoed by Glen Durrant, the three-time Lakeside world champion, who said: “On the floor, Cammy has been the best player in the room. He’s the one that has stood out.
“It feels like it is a different game when you go on stage. It is just not happening for him. He is full of emotion.
“When you look at his preparation, he will have to work out if he is to find a solution about why he doesn’t play on the stage as he does on the floor. He’s extremely talented.
“But at the end, it was a little worrying, I didn’t know if he was getting upset. If the heat was getting to him. It was a pretty bizarre ending.
“Very, very disappointing. He has people around him but he has to work it out himself. No point feeling sorry for himself. He’s a great darts player. He has to find a way through this.
“The excitement of playing on that stage is there but 16 per cent on the doubles was going to be his Achilles heel.”
In November, Menzies opened up on his mindset and revealed he was looking into talking to a sports psychologist.
What made Gates’ victory all the sweeter – and perhaps the more surprising – was the fact he only landed in London the day of his game against Menzies.
The American put the travelling mishap down to a simple ‘mental mistake’.
“The truth is, I looked at the bracket wrong,” Gates said.

“I didn’t know I had to play Cameron today. I was looking at the 18th, where it said Nathan and it had Cameron Menzies or Leonard Gates.
“It was just kind of a mental mistake, but it bugged me. Everything I was doing back in the States, my body wasn’t feeling right. So I got on my phone and I was like, ‘Oh my god’, because I actually changed my flight to fly out on the 15th. Initially I was supposed to fly out on the 13th.
“I got off the plane and got to the hotel and checked in early. I didn’t go to sleep.
“I brought my board with me, I was just throwing on my board with me until I got over here. I’ll leave here, I don’t know if I’m going to crash or blow up or anything. I’m just on energy right now.”
