A few days before Christmas, the weather models paint a gloomy picture: mild temperatures, stormy weather and rain instead of snow.
Frankfurt – The anticipation of a wintry Christmas is clouded: Leading weather models such as GFS and ECMWF show a clear trend towards milder temperatures and stormy weather for the week before Christmas. According to the weather maps from wetter.net, spring-like 15 to 16 degrees could be reached in western Germany, especially on Thursday (December 19th) – a clear break with expectations of a contemplative, wintry festival. Meteorologists see this model change as a signal for troubled days. If the forecasts are confirmed, we will experience a Christmas that is more reminiscent of spring than winter. But we already know that from previous years.
Danger of storms instead of snowflakes – weather models show spring temperatures
In addition to the mild temperatures, there is also a threat of stormy weather. From the fourth Advent, strong low pressure areas could cause strong gusts of wind, especially on the coast and at higher altitudes. Rainfall amounts of up to 100 liters per square meter are also possible, which could lead to rising river levels. The risk of flooding is therefore not ruled out. Snow remains unlikely, and the onset of winter is questionable even in the low mountain ranges and Alps. Instead, rain and mild temperatures dominate the Christmas weather. At least that is the current status on Saturday (December 14th).

The developments in the coming days remain exciting as the weather models could still change. The forecasts currently point to unsettled and disappointing weather for winter fans. Temperatures around 10 degrees, rain and the risk of storms are anything but a guarantee for a peaceful holiday. It remains to be seen whether the models will rotate again and still bring snow into play. One thing is clear: a white Christmas is once again unlikely in 2024 – and the model chaos increases the uncertainties.
