“We will love each other”, this phrase is that of the famous song by Gilbert Montagné. The singer was convicted in Italy for plagiarizing “Une fille de France” by Gianni Nazzaro, released in 1976. Thus, he will no longer receive royalties on this title.
It is the ultimate holiday song, even if for Gilbert Montagné, it is no longer the time for festivities. He was convicted of plagiarizing the choruses of another song, a 1976 piece by Italian singer Gianni Nazzaro. Montagné defends himself, claiming to have never heard this title. But, after more than 10 years of legal battle, the artist will no longer receive a cent of copyright on this title. Ironically, the singer himself had sued a restaurant chain for plagiarism. He then obtained significant compensation.
One of the most famous cases of plagiarism in the history of music is that of Michael Jackson with his title “Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'” and its famous ending largely inspired by Manu Dibango's song. The matter will eventually be settled by financial transaction.
Although cases of plagiarism are common, justice is rarely taken, because proving an infringement is not easy.
