Emmanuel Macron will go to Mayotte “in the coming days” and declare national mourning

Emmanuel Macron announced Monday evening that he will go “to Mayotte in the coming days in support” of people hit by the deadly passage of Cyclone Chido, “of civil servants and mobilized relief forces”. “It’s about facing emergencies and starting to prepare for the future,” the president said after a government crisis meeting.

First 25 patients evacuated

“Twenty-five first medical evacuations of patients in urgent situations” were carried out this Monday between Mayotte and , announced the Minister of Health Geneviève Darrieussecq. “Several flights took place during the day to make these evacuations possible,” detailed the minister, specifying that “these medical evacuation operations will continue in the coming days.”

In a final report, still very provisional, the authorities report 21 dead and 45 injured in absolute emergency. 1,373 injured are in relative emergency. The Minister of Health also intends to continue actions aimed at “delivering human and material reinforcements according to the evolution of the situation and the health needs of our Mahorais compatriots”. The situation of the healthcare system is “very degraded” in Mayotte, where the only hospital was “very damaged” and the medical centers are “inoperable”, Geneviève Darrieussecq declared earlier in the day.
