While the Blues have inherited, notably England and the Netherlands, a strong group for the next Euro, their coach Laurent Bonadei remains confident and, above all, “a happy man”.
After having equaled their best result in a major international competition during the last edition by reaching the semi-finals, following three consecutive failures in the quarters, the Blue will try to do better during the next Euro, scheduled in Switzerland from July 2 to 27 2025. But the draw, carried out late Monday afternoon in Lausanne, was not kind to Laurent Bonadei's players. They will play in group D, alongside the English, title holders and vice-world champions, the Dutch, who are one place ahead of them in the latest FIFA rankings (11th against 10th), and the Welsh, a priori more affordable .
For the French coach, “it's an exciting, tough group, with great teams. And when we say exciting, we also think that it will give a dynamic to the public. I hope that the French supporters will be present for encourage us, we will need it.” And remember that the Bleues finished in qualifying ahead of the English, whom they beat at home at the end of May before losing a few days later in the return match at Geoffroy-Guichard.
“We deserved it”
A “very good team” for Bonadei, interviewed by the FFF and who also underlines that “the Netherlands have moved ahead of us in the FIFA rankings since they are tenth, finalists of the 2019 World Cup, always with quality football .” Before recognizing that “we know Wales a little less, it's their first participation. But we know the state of mind of the British and we suspect that this team will give a hard time in this group .”
The former deputy of Hervé Renard is “a happy man” (“because when you are there, it is the fruit of the work done before”), and is not afraid of this tough group. “We have to remember that we were in a group announced as “death”, with Sweden and England in particular. We finished first and if we are there, it’s because we deserved it .”
