To everyone's surprise, the national anti-terrorist prosecution, when taking its requisitions on December 16, gave up demanding sentences for “complicity” against Abdoullakh Anzorov's two best friends. Two accused, the Islamist from Gard Priscilla Mangel and the friend from Évreux Yusuf Cinar, completely escape criminal classification and get away with fairly light required sentences. The public prosecutor explained this. More severe were the sanctions demanded against the duo Abdelhakim Sefrioui and Brahim Chnina. Ultimately, between eighteen months suspended prison sentence and 16 years in prison were requested against the very heterogeneous group of 8 accused.
An indictment and reversals to everyone's surprise. This December 16, at the end of six weeks of a grueling trial, the attorneys general Nicolas Braconnay and Martine Valentin detailed, for almost 6 hours, their final reading of the spiral which led to the assassination of Samuel Paty. Before listing, one by one, the sentences they requested against the eight accused, immediately triggering protests from the lawyers of the civil parties. “These are scandalous requisitions”castigated Virginie Le Roy, counsel for the Paty family, leaving the special assize court in Paris at the end of the day.
Repress without excess
It was Nicolas Braconnay, deputy anti-terrorism prosecutor, who inaugurated this extremely anticipated sequence. In a learned tone, he put on gloves, and prepared people's minds for the few surprises that were to follow. “To accuse is to completely seek the truth and tell it to you. To accuse is to repress without weakness but without excess, leading to individualized repression of the crimes committed by each person. It is to demonstrate the qualifications of the facts, not necessarily the highest but the fairest”he intoned.
