James Gunn Reveals Imminent DCU ‘Superman’ Trailer Release Date

Superman

James Gunn

James Gunn posted a motion poster teaser this morning that tricked some people into thinking it was a Superman trailer. But a short while later, he posted a tiny teaser with the announcement that the actual Superman trailer had an actual release date: Thursday, December 19. If it’s around the same time he’s posting stuff now, that would be at 9 AM ET.

Here’s the teaser that Gunn just posted, which I supposed can be overanalyzed. It’s some sort of engraved Superman logo in metal. In his Fortress? The Hall of Justice? Who knows.

And here’s the motion poster that he put up before that, which is a new, official look at David Corenswet’s Superman in flight.

The Superman trailer will not reveal the release date of the movie because…we already know that, even if you may have missed it. The film will be out July 11, 2025, which is eight months away, and the reason we’re getting a trailer now, as that is not that far away.

This will be the main kick-off of the DCU, even though yes, technically, it’s already started. Currently, the first real DCU thing is Creature Commandos, the animated series that features Suicide Squad monster remnants with some characters that will eventually appear in live-action played by their voice counterparts. One of those is Clayface, voiced by Alan Tudyk, who will soon appear in Creature Commandos. And apparently, star in that film. Gunn has also appeared to make large pieces of his own Peacemaker and Suicide Squad canon, bringing over plot points and actors from those, albeit perhaps with some exceptions (we have no idea of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will ever exist in this universe, for instance, and she seemed to be moving on).

The Superman trailer will be really the defining moment of the early DCU here to see what Gunn’s vision is in live action. Will it lean as hard into comedy as Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy, or is he going for an entirely new tone here?

After this, the big projects on the table are a Supergirl film and the Lanterns HBO show. Many more series and movies have been announced, but those are further off and all are without casts. There’s also The Batman 2 coming, which is not in the DCU, but Gunn says a script is not even in for that yet.

I am very much looking forward to Thursday to get some glimpse at what is hopefully a great new era of DC to give Marvel a run for its money. We’ll find out soon.
