European institutions, NATO site… has Belgium strengthened the security of its sensitive sites?

Many conflicts are taking place across the world, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East. Given the tense geopolitical situation, has Belgium strengthened security around certain sensitive sites?

Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden recommends that Belgians prepare for emergency situations, such as armed conflict or a natural disaster. The geopolitical context is, in fact, tense, with ongoing conflicts in Europe, such as in Ukraine, as well as in the Middle East. In 2025, the National Crisis Center will launch a major campaign aimed at strengthening the “resilience” of the population.

Faced with these challenges, has the Belgian state taken measures to strengthen security? When it comes to sensitive sites, such as European institutions or NATO headquarters, authorities never disclose details of security measures for reasons of national security. However, according to our sources, it is reasonable to believe that actions are put in place depending on the geopolitical context, particularly around the Russian and Ukrainian embassies, as well as international institutions.

Belgium still at level 3

Currently, Belgium is still at threat level 3, which does not mean the automatic implementation of enhanced security measures everywhere, but rather adjustments based on specific locations and risks.

As for the 2025 campaign, the Crisis Center emphasizes that there is no imminent risk of conflict in Belgium, and that this is not an urgent preparation for war. The main risks rather concern cyber incidents, storms, floods, or even power cuts in the event of failure of a power plant or disruption in strategic supplies, such as gas. It is within this framework that the campaign aims to raise awareness among citizens of the importance of being prepared to face these situations.

It’s always useful and clever

The Crisis Center emphasizes that there are no mandatory recommendations, but that it is wise to prepare for any eventuality. In response to the question of whether these preparations are really useful, they give the following example: “If you ask me if having a bag of pasta stored at home is useful, the answer is yes, it is useful and it is smart. The same goes for this emergency kit.

In summary, although there are no mandatory instructions, citizens are advised to think about simple precautionary measures and be prepared to react to various situations.
