As reported by L'Informé, Thursday December 12, the singer and his lyricist, Didier Barbelivien, were condemned in Italy for having copied the title “Une fille de France” by Gianni Nazzaro. They will therefore no longer receive any copyright on their piece.
This is an affair which does not fail to tarnish the image of Gilbert Montagné. As reported by the economic site L'Informé, Thursday, December 12, the French singer and his lyricist, Didier Barbelivien, were convicted in Italy for plagiarizing the title Une fille de France by Gianni Nazzaro, released in 1976, for his famous hit We're going to love each other. As a result, neither Gilbert Montagné nor Didier Barbelivien will receive royalties in the future from listening to this title which propelled their careers in 1984.
According to our colleagues, the case dates back to 2012. Gianni Nazzaro, at the time still alive before dying in July 2021, decided to file a complaint for plagiarism against Gilbert Montagné and Didier Barbelivien for their title On will love each other. But, for ten years, the two artists refused to recognize this dispute and to pay the royalties of the piece to Michel Cywie and Jean-Max Rivière, to whom we owe the creation of the song A girl from France.
Gilbert Montagné and Didier Barbelivien finally sentenced to 30,000 euros in damages
It was only following a decision by the French courts, which ruled on the case on October 9 and rendered a ruling in favor of Gianni Nazzaro, that Gilbert Montagné and Didier Barbelivien faced the facts. The two singers were ordered to pay 30,000 euros in damages to the heirs of the Italian singer as compensation and henceforth waive their royalties on this song. For its part, Italian justice demanded 1.67 million euros in compensation.
