The wind storm that affects Tenerife has caused a night of anguish for the residents of the north of the island. Overturned containers, leaning trees and even torn off garage doors are just some of the damage reported. Below, we collect the testimonies of those who experienced this complicated situation firsthand.
The fear of the unforeseeable in La Matanza
Luis, a resident of La Matanza, tells how he spent the night unable to sleep due to the constant noise of the wind and the fear of possible accidents: “I thought something could happen, like a palm tree or a sign breaking and causing an accident.” The gusts, he says, caused even the Christmas tarps to sway dangerously.
Nito, another resident, felt in danger throughout the night from the sound of slamming doors and windows. Despite the hours that have passed, he assures.
Tacoronte: the storm at the door of your house
In Tacoronte, Alejandro explains that, although he did not suffer power outages, he did lived a complicated night due to the noise of doors and windows: “Sleeping was almost impossible, but luckily there were no serious incidents inside the house.” However, outside, the situation was different. While driving, the gusts moved his vehicle, and on the highway he observed security elements that the wind had displaced: “There was a security panel practically taking up an entire lane.”
Rafael, also in Tacoronte, experienced a bigger scare: half his garage door was torn off by the wind“Thanks to the neighbors we were able to restrain it before it caused a greater misfortune. The door is huge, four meters, and even so it could not resist.” Rafael remembers another similar experience during Storm Delta, when his home suffered even greater damage.
Cipriano and Patricia in Los Realejos: under the light of the storm
In Los Realejos, the situation was no less alarming. Cipriano and Patricia They live near an electrical tower that was on the verge of collapsing due to strong gusts. Cipriano relates: “All night long you could hear the cables vibrating, it seemed like the tower was not going to hold up.”
For her part, Patricia explains the fear of living under that structure: “It's a feeling of helplessness, you don't know if you'll come out unscathed if it collapses.”. Both agree that it is urgent to review the security of these infrastructures in cases of storms.
The wind has left behind a trail of destruction and anguish among the residents of the north of Tenerife. Although some claim that the worst is over, others still fear that the storm could bring more problems. In the words of Rafael, who was affected by the loss of his garage door: “I just hope this ends soon, because we've had enough.”
