Two Russian oil tankers got into distress in the Black Sea during a storm. It is clear that a lot of oil has leaked.

Two Russian oil tankers got into distress off the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which was annexed by Moscow. One crew member was killed. One of the ships ran aground on a sandbank and the second ran aground off the shore, Russian civil defense said. Two helicopters and two tugboats were used to rescue the teams.
The ships “Volgoneft-239” and “Volgoneft-212” are identical river vessels. According to the authorities, both had loaded almost 4,500 tons of heating oil.

Eyewitnesses report that one of the tankers broke through in the middle – a corresponding video can also be seen online. The authorities have now confirmed that a large amount of oil has leaked into the sea. All 15 crew members, including the dead man, have already been taken from one of the ships.

The incident occurred in heavy seas in the Kerch Strait between mainland Russia and Crimea. The strait also separates the Black Sea from the Sea of Azov. A storm warning has been issued in Crimea. The storm is expected to last until Monday, and recovery and rescue work has been repeatedly interrupted.
There were 14 and 15 crew members on board the ships. The public prosecutor’s office has begun investigations into security violations.
