This is a major change in transport in Île-de-France. Since this Sunday, December 15, 2024, the extension of the RER E to Nanterre-la-Folie station (Hauts-de-Seine) is finally effective after eight years of work and more than 5 billion euros invested.
From now on, all trains coming from the eastern axis of the region (Chelles, Gournay, Villiers-sur-Marne, Le Plessis-Trévise and Tournan) will go directly to Nanterre. The change that has taken place until now at Saint-Lazare station in Paris will therefore no longer be necessary.

A top speed of 120 km/h
This is the other – and undoubtedly the biggest – revolution of this line: the speed of the trains. With a peak speed of 120 km/h on the central section, it will only take ten minutes to reach La Défense from Gare du Nord and 15 minutes to reach the terminus at Nanterre-la-Folie.
Unclog the RER A
This new offer should also help relieve congestion on the RER A, the busiest line in Europe. At least this is the objective of Île-de-France Mobilités and the SNCF. Ultimately, the objective is to go from 300,000 daily travelers on the RER E to 600 000.
In total, 16 trains will run per hourat the busiest times of the day, with an interval of four minutes between RERs. Ten trains will be in service the rest of the day, or one service every six minutes.
On the other hand, the full commissioning of RER line E to Mantes-la-Jolie (Yvelines), promised in 2026 a few months ago, is postponed to the end of 2029 at best.
