Barcelona returns to LaLiga with a moral obligation to regain their winning form and confidence, theoretically looking forward to facing a Leganés side that has lost all five of their previous visits to the Catalan capital. The azulgrana team, currently at the top of the table, heads into Sunday’s clash buoyed by Real Madrid’s stumble in Vallecas and invigorated by their recent European victory in Dortmund.
Only one of the 16 players who participated in the last match against Leganés back in June 2020 remains in the Barcelona squad – Ansu Fati. He was the one to open the scoring in a 2-0 victory during the last matchday (29) that saw Barcelona, under Quique Setién, hold the leadership position during the COVID-19 season. That season controversially concluded with a title for Real Madrid, while Leganés, managed by Javier Aguirre, was relegated to Segunda División, where they remained until last season, earning promotion as champions.

This Sunday, Barcelona will feature Ronald Araújo as the main addition in the squad (although he is expected to start the match on the bench), with expectations high for him to make his first appearance after Hansi Flick acknowledged yesterday that he has been recovering well. Flick, for his part, will serve the first of two matches of suspension following his expulsion on the pitch against Betis.
The azulgrana team has the opportunity to extend their lead over Real Madrid to four points at the top of the standings and, at the very least, maintain a three-point advantage over Atlético, who will host Getafe this Sunday before visiting Montjuïc in the next round.
