Francesco Farioli answered a barrage of questions from Hans Kraay junior prior to the match against Almere City FC. The Italian coach is being questioned critically because of Ajax’s very surprising line-up, which contains no fewer than six changes.
Farioli goes through the names one by one. “Josip Sutalo is sick. He wasn’t doing well this morning. Jorrel Hato? It’s a decision. Jorrel is not tired, no. He has played a long series of matches and we have decided to give him a match rest. For That also applies to Steven Berghuis, Mika Godts and Bertrand Traoré, the same decision.”
Ajax starts with Kenneth Taylor and Chuba Akpom on the wings. That is not their natural position, Farioli realizes. “It would be risky to start with Mika and Bertrand. We only have two pure wingers. We have seen in recent weeks how difficult we are without Mika, so I would rather make this decision than not have them be there for a long time.” .”
The decision is also made in consultation with the medical staff, Farioli explains. “Mika has already played more in the last two games than was actually intended. Bertrand has barely played ninety minutes in recent years, so we have to be careful.”
Farioli sticks to Ajax’s 4-3-3 formation. “We have played with two strikers at times, but we have little time to train this period, so we prefer to stay in the same structure.”
Finally, Kraay junior asks Farioli when he will announce his number one striker at Ajax. “So that it is clear to everyone,” said the reporter.
“Never,” it sounds very clear from Farioli. “No, never. Because there is no number one striker. This is a good answer for the entire season. There will never be a number one, that applies to every position.”
