Shortly after her arrest, Iranian musician Parastu Ahmadi and two of her band members have been released. Her lawyer Milad Panahipur told the daily newspaper “Sharhg” (online). However, he has not yet had any contact with his clients, who now have to wait for the official indictment.
The three musicians were arrested on Saturday and released on Sunday night, according to the lawyer. The reason for their arrest: Parastu had broken several taboos. She sang without a headscarf, in an un-Islamic dress and published the concert on YouTube. People at home and abroad had praised the woman in online media for her courageous initiative.
Many women in Iran are dissatisfied with the strict Islamic laws and dress codes. In the fall of 2022, masses took to the streets under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom” against the repressive policies, but the demonstrations were violently suppressed.
Many women in the major cities are now resisting the Islamic dress code in protest, particularly the compulsory headscarf. The parliament, which is dominated by Islamic hardliners, now wants to take action against this with a new law and draconian punishments.
