In the end, the point with the German champions was within reach: After being 0-2 behind, our team delivered a strong performance in the game at Bayer Leverkusen after the break and scored through Morgan Guilavogui, but unfortunately it was enough to score more despite further good chances not. As in the previous games against other top teams, our team kept up thanks to a strong defensive performance, but in the end they were not rewarded with anything worth counting. “We showed again that we can keep up. The next step is to get a better result,” said captain Jackson Irvine after the final whistle.
In the last home game against SV Werder Bremen, our Kiezkickers want to do everything they can to reward themselves with something worth counting. They want to follow up their first home win this season (3-1 against Holstein Kiel) with their second. “I think I have a chance of getting another home win,” emphasized former Bremen player Johannes Eggestein before the game. Against a ““very well organized team,” as coach Alexander Blessin emphasized, our Boys in Brown have to get “the maximum” out of themselves if they want to score points.
FCSP with just one BL win –
Legendary success in the DFB Cup
Points against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga – that didn’t happen very often. The Green-Whites have won all of the last seven duels, the last time our FCSP picked up a point in the football upper house was in October 1995 against SVW and achieved their only victory to date in the historically first Bundesliga game at all. That was more than 47 years ago. In the 2021/22 second division season, both games ended 1-1 and, apart from the legendary game in the quarter-finals in January 2006, Werder always prevailed in the DFB Cup. This is literally yesterday’s news, but will never be forgotten.
Back to the here and now and to SV Werder Bremen, which has moved beyond good and evil this season (never better than eighth place and never worse than 13th place). Most recently, SVW won 1-0 at bottom team Bochum, it was already their fourth win in their seventh away game. “It was a victory of passion, not a playful treat,” said SVW coach Ole Werner about the win in Bochum. “The fact that we can take something from games like this without shining in a playful way is a very important development step,” he added. The Green-Whites climbed from twelfth place to tenth and are only two points behind fifth-placed Wolfsburg. With a win at Millerntor, Bremen want to take another step and get even closer to the European Cup places.
Bremen punishes ball losses
but is often punished himself
The SVW recently prevailed in Bochum because Jens Stage scored once again. It was the midfielder’s sixth goal of the season and he only needed 14 shots to score it. Behind Jamal Musiala (eight goals), he is the most dangerous midfielder in the league. Speaking of dangerous: Werder has already scored five goals after a counterattack, seven goals after a cross and six goals after a bad pass from the opponent in the build-up game. For better classification: All values mean second place in the league. If punishing opponents’ mistakes in building up the game is a strength of the Green-Whites, it is also a weakness on the other side. Nine of the already 24 Goals conceded resulted from our own mistakes in building up the game; no other team was punished more often.
FCSP hospital unchanged –
Quartet missing from Werder
Before the last home game of the year, the hospital situation for our Kiezkickers had not cleared up; head coach Blessin, like last time, has to do without at least nine players. Of all the players missing recently, only Scott Banks returned to the training pitch during the week. However, Blessin still left it open whether he would be a candidate for the squad. What is certain is that Morgan Guilavogui (5th yellow card), who scored against Kiel and Leverkusen, will be missing. SVW coach Ole Werner has significantly fewer personnel worries. With Felix Agu, Leonardo Bittencourt, Justin Njinmah and Keke Topp, the guests are only missing four players. Miloš Veljković, Jens Stage, Senne Lynen and Oliver Burke are again fit for action; the quartet was missing from team training at the start of the week.
