Beerschot and Standard were unable to score this afternoon. The home team proved to be the most dangerous, but could not crack the code of Liège goalkeeper Epolo. In the rankings, both teams buy very little with a point.
Both Beerschot and Standard had to miss a few important players. Initially, this seemed to mainly bother the visitors. Henderson immediately offered Keita a chance with a deep pass, but he pushed the ball too far in front of him.
Keita was often wanted in that opening phase. The second time Epolo headed the ball away at risk to life and limb, the third time the Liège goalkeeper strongly saved Keita’s shot. Moments later he also floated a long shot from Dagba from the top corner.
Standard had a flare-up after fifteen minutes, but without any clear opportunities. They were there again for Beerschot. Reyners aimed at Epolo after a cut and Verlinden also failed to get past the keeper’s chest diagonally in front of goal.
Just before the break an apple fell out of the cupboard for Standard. Shinton could only half-block Eckert Ayensa and was assisted on the line by Mbe Soh.
The second half started with a chance for Al-Sahafi, who stumbled on the battered Kiel mat at the worst possible moment. After half-chances for Kuavita and Price on the other side, things fell a bit quiet. It started to pour over Antwerp and the match became an increasingly tough battle in midfield.
In the end, only Beerschot claimed victory, but the Saudi connection was unable to finish. Al-Ghamdi kicked a free chance into the air and Al-Sahafi was unable to get past that captivating Epolo in the short corner.
