A wintry mix is forecast to impact northern Illinois today, with freezing rain expected to create hazardous road conditions by the afternoon. Areas northwest of Crystal Lake and near the Mendota line face the highest risk of icy roads and slippery sidewalks. Travelers should remain cautious and plan for extra time to navigate untreated surfaces.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain will begin transitioning from a wintry mix between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Rain is expected to intensify through the evening, with temperatures hovering near freezing. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m., covering areas including DeKalb, McHenry, and Kendall counties. Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly on untreated secondary roads and highways like I-39 and US-14.
Tonight, patchy dense fog will develop after midnight, further reducing visibility. Rain will continue before tapering off early Sunday morning. Temperatures will climb slightly above freezing overnight, reaching the low 40s by Sunday afternoon.
Looking ahead, a warming trend will extend into Monday, with highs in the mid-40s. However, colder weather returns midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday will see highs in the 30s, with chances for light snow by midweek.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates throughout the day and prepare for potentially icy conditions. Those traveling should carry emergency supplies, slow down, and increase following distances on slick roads. Visit weather.gov/chicago for the latest updates.
