Air Assault Support Regiment kick Christmas off with sandy Essex fitness session

Logisticians from 13 Air Assault Support Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, have kicked off the festive season with a sandy session of fitness training.

The personnel headed to Mersea Island in Essex for the Christmas beasting, which ranged from press-ups in the breaking waves of the Blackwater Estuary to a log race along the beach’s shifting sands.

Staff Sergeant Kim Bowling, who is in charge of the fitness and sport for the regiment, said they wanted something “a bit different and get away from the gym” for a fun festive session.

“I think it was very obvious that we were going to finish in the sea as soon as we arrived, but everyone got stuck in and were smiling!” she said.

“It’s been a great way to mark the end of the year and send everyone off on their well-deserved Christmas leave.”

The role of the personnel who were doing press ups in Essex waves is to provide logistic and equipment support to 16 Air Assault Brigade, the British Army’s global response force.

This year, its troops have been used to parachute aid into Gaza and taken part in training across Britain and the wider world.

16 Air Assault Brigade is the British Army’s global response force and is specially trained to deploy by parachute, helicopter and airlanding.

Its main role is to command the Air Manoeuvre Task Force (AMTF), which is held at high readiness to deploy around the world and carry out a number of missions.

This varies from non-combatant evacuation operations to war fighting.

It is at the forefront of developing interoperability with the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and the French Army’s 11e Brigade Parachutiste.
