François Bayrou appointed Prime Minister by Emmanuel Macron

The head of state appointed François Bayrou at Matignon this Friday, December 13 as successor to Michel Barnier. The composition of his government is expected in the coming days.

A new tenant in Matignon. Nine days after the censorship of Michel Barnier, overthrown by a vote of deputies in the National Assembly on Wednesday December 4, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron decided to appoint François Bayrou as Prime Minister, the Élysée announced this Friday December 13.

“The President of the Republic has appointed Mr. François BAYROU Prime Minister, and charged him with forming a government,” the press release soberly indicates.

After consulting most of the political groups represented in the National Assembly with the exception of La insoumise and the National Rally, Emmanuel Macron ended up making a decision.

The president set Tuesday, December 10, a deadline of 48 hours to appoint the new Prime Minister. A deadline that Emmanuel Macron ultimately did not respect.

The 2025 budget in sight

It is now up to the new tenant of Matignon to find a state and social security budget for 2025. If a special law is ready to renew budgetary credits for the coming weeks, the new Prime Minister will have to quickly propose new finance law.

3 short months and then gone: the inevitable fall of Michel Barnier

With one objective: to achieve agreement by a majority of deputies to avoid the activation of article 49.3 of the Constitution, this institutional cartridge which allows a text to be adopted without a vote but by engaging the responsibility of the government. A device which immediately allows oppositions to file a motion of censure. If adopted, the new head of government would in turn be overthrown.

This summer, Emmanuel Macron waited 51 days before appointing a new tenant in Matignon, without however allowing Michel Barnier to spend the winter.
