finally, the 500 hp electric Renault 5 will exist!

Outlined by a concept two years ago, at the Motor Show, the turbulent Renault 5 Turbo 3E will arrive in series. A small production intended for competition. In two years his appearance has changed a lot.

Presented in the form of an exuberant show car during the Paris Motor Show in autumn 2022, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E will reach the series milestone. In the documentary Anatomy of a Come-Back, at the end of the fourth and final episode, it is Luca de Meo, in person, who ensures this.

The CEO of the Renault group had already hinted as much two years ago during the Paris showthis time the car is almost ready, here is its appearance which has really evolved.

This reinterpretation of the Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2 from the 1980s, 44 years later, in 100% electric mode uses the yellow/white/black color codes dear to the Renault management era. And even more from the very cutting-edge GTU IMSA version which tried its luck on the other side of the Atlantic with, at the time, the small 1.4 Cléon engine stuffed with an impressive turbo through mechanical injection delivering a power of 260 hp, or 100 hp more than the production version.

A clever way to take a look back in the vein of the latest in-house creations: R5 E-Tech and Renault 4. A machine dedicated to competition, the R5 Turbo 3E features a propulsion architecture like its ancestor . Two electric motors driving each of the rear wheels combine a respectable power of 500 hp. More than the fastest Renault 5 Turbo of the time, the “Superproduction” version with 390 hp at 7,000 rpm (see our photo gallery). Enough to accelerate very quickly from 0 to 100 km/h with a time approved for 3 seconds.

Especially since the carbon structure – remodeled in its rear part in order to ensure the connection with the electric R5 E-Tech currently arriving in dealerships without forgetting a small spoiler in the style of that of the Alpine A290 – will be a guarantee of lightness and rigidity. Like the prototype that announced it, it will be the ideal toy for drifting on the track, an exercise mastered by the emeritus pilot Jean Ragnotti. According to Renault, the vehicle is currently under development.
