Di María could go down in Champions League history with the Benfica shirt

Argentinian is second all-time in the assists ranking and no longer has the competition from the man he leads: Cristiano Ronaldo; there are other relevant numbers for the red winger at stake in the match against Bologna

Ángel Di María, Benfica’s Argentine winger, could enter the history of the Champions League this Wednesday, against Bologna, depending on his inspiration in the passing section, as it is the assists that are at stake.

The world champion who shines with an eagle on his chest currently has, and according to official UEFA accounts, 41 assists, just one less than Cristiano Ronaldo and even has fewer appearances in the competition than the Portuguese star of Al Nassr, from Saudi Arabia. Right behind these two, of course, Leo Messi, another star, but Argentine, from Inter Miami (USA), with 40 passes to goal.

With two assists against Monaco, Benfica’s Argentine overtakes Messi and is one away from equaling the Portuguese’s record in the competition

Di María, Benfica’s most likely starter, will therefore have this match against Bologna to immediately become the best assistant of all time in the Champions League, if he doesn’t succeed there will be other options: the Eagles will still host Barcelona and visit Juventus at this stage of the League, in addition to the possibility of Bruno Lage’s team moving forward. The competition, however, is either very far away or no longer steps on stages of this caliber.

So far, there have been 112 Champions League matches, 34 Europa League matches, two Europa League qualifying matches and 1 Champions League qualifying match. Goals are 38.
