Simeone: “We Compete in Our League Against the Two Best in Europe”

Cholo celebrates the victory and reiterates the tough schedule: “No one cares, but they now have us playing at 14:00…”

“I focus on the team’s work; we came off a significant effort, three matches in six days, and the response was very good in all games. In the end, we lacked that freshness that we could have had with a bit more rest. There are two matches left against very good teams; we face Leverkusen, one of the best in the competition, and we’ll see how far we can go. We will give our all and accept whatever points come our way.”

He maintains the squad despite the congested fixture list.

“Today’s match was important for us; earning points for all the effort we’ve been putting in and maintaining our momentum was crucial to win today. The effort was evident: we controlled the first half, created significant chances, and in the second half, we managed well despite that penalty that could have posed challenges due to the tight scoreline. However, the players handled it well, and we took home three points that were vital for us.”

Simeone: “It’s normal to feel drained at the end, we all have the need to rest…”

They have now achieved ten consecutive victories with players like De Paul in inspired form.

“From the first day we considered Rodrigo, we knew about his quality. He has shown it with the Argentine national team, at Atleti with good moments and some areas to improve, and he is demonstrating incredibly important consistency. He sees the game differently, provides the final pass, strikes for goal, and works hard. When a player possesses such traits, it makes us better as a team.”

Asked why they are winning so much now, he replied, “It’s football; it turns and changes, bringing moments of difficulty and those that allow you to perform well. We know what we have, where we want to go, and we aim to improve.”

Would he like the club to protest against the scheduling?

“Everyone needs to rest and shouldn’t play in such tight schedules. I mention this because we played on Thursday, then on Sunday at 21:00 after having the Champions League, then Wednesday, and now back to Sunday at 14:00 when we could be playing at night. But no one cares; what matters are the results. If we play poorly and don’t work hard, there’s no criticism, and if we play well, no one comments on it.”

They know how to manage matches.

“I don’t want to give a rating; I’m talking about the team’s awareness of what happens in the game. Against Cacereño, it was tough; against Vic too; we had to endure against , and every match has been different, and the team has been responding to the situations we encounter during a game.”

Interestingly, there were two coaches with their children on the pitch:

“I believe if the coach chooses to field a player, he doesn’t think of putting his son on. Like me, neither of us looked at our players as our children; we see them as footballers.”

“Dreaming big means dreaming about the next match, focusing on one game at a time, knowing it’s a League with Real Madrid and Barcelona, the best teams in Europe. You will likely face them in the Cup if you keep advancing and at crucial moments in the Champions League, too; in the League, we always compete against them, and they are the best. We are playing against two very good teams in our own League.”
