“A little disappointed at first”
As runner-up top scorer in the last Bundesliga season, there was great interest in Serhou Guirassy in the summer. VfB Stuttgart tried to keep the top striker, FC Bayern apparently inquired about him – but Borussia Dortmund got the contract. However, the 18 million euro move was delayed due to a knee injury. But he wasn’t “scared” about it, as the Guinean emphasized in an interview with “Sport Bild”.
“But at first I was a bit disappointed because I really wanted to come to Dortmund. Of course, at one point I had the feeling that the change might fail. And it would have been a bitter blow for me if it hadn’t worked out, because I really consciously chose this club. But my career would otherwise have continued elsewhere. In Stuttgart or at a completely different club. “I’ve always been someone who only looks forward,” said Guirassy.
The record champions from Munich were also traded, whose efforts the attacker indirectly confirmed. “I personally didn’t get a call, but I also heard that there was interest.” However, there was never an official offer from Bayern, as Guirassy confirmed, and his decision was quickly made. “It was clear to me early on that I wanted to play for BVB.”
Guirassy: Şahin played a big part in the decision for BVB
Coach Nuri Şahin also played a “big part” in this, as the 28-year-old emphasized. “He called me, as did Sebastian Kehl (sports director; editor). It is often the case at clubs that the manager wants a player, but the coach doesn’t. Or the other way around. This was not the case here at all. They spoke the same language.” Sahin then told him that he only wanted one striker and no other.
Guirassy had already followed the now 36-year-old during his playing days as a professional. “When I was young I always watched him. “I even played against him once,” he said, drawing parallels to his ex-coach from Stuttgart with a view to coach Şahin. “Nuri Şahin and Sebastian Hoeneß are very similar. They think a lot about football, they live for this job. This gives you a lot of ideas that make a team better.”
Under Hoeneß, Guirassy reached his current career peak, became runner-up, scored 30 goals across all competitions, more than ever before in a season and increased his market value to the current record of 40 million euros. For BVB, to which he moved with an exit clause and with whom he signed until 2028, he has ten goals and four assists in 16 games so far, making him the team’s best scorer.
