Paulo Fonseca used his pre-match press conference ahead of the Red Star game to respond to the AC Milan fans who are not happy with how the season is going.
As Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) reports this morning, Milan’s mission tonight is clear: win against the Serbians to climb to 12 points in the table and boost their chances of getting a top eight spot.
However, there is an uneasy climate surrounding the Rossoneri at the moment. Results in the league have not been good enough and the Champions League has only served as a partial distraction.
Speaking before the game at San Siro tonight, Fonseca was asked about fans’ concerns that Milan might be heading down a path that will not even see them compete in the main European competition next season.
“We have a great chance, but we must only think about the match against Red Star, which will be difficult. Then we will think about the last two games and the possibility of finishing in the top eight,” he said.
“They are different games. I think the team are increasingly doing in the league what they do in Europe. We have improved in attack and defence. In the Champions League the games are more open and there is more space.
“If we look at the results we are disappointed, we have not been very consistent, but we have played some good games, not only in the Champions League. If I look at the growth process I am happy and confident.
“Fan worries? I understand, if we look at the standings, the feelings of the fans and I am sorry. But we are working to improve. We are working to change. I am here and I continue to believe that we are improving and that we will eventually arrive in another position.
“I have no doubts about this, which is why I continue to work every day with the same confidence and positivity that I have had since day one.”
