Player Ratings: Atalanta 2-3 Real Madrid; 2024 UEFA Champions League

Full match player ratings below:

Thibaut Courtois—8: Despite conceding two goals, Courtois did well facing a number of shots (7 saves total), with 3 from inside the box.

Lucas Vazquez—5.5: Adama Lookman got the better of Vazquez and scored Atalanta’s second goal by taking the fullback on 1v1 inside the box.

Tchouameni—5.5: Looked like a midfielder playing center back when conceding the penalty—a needless foul inside the box. Like Rudiger, he was great defending crosses and winning headed clearances inside the eighteen.

Rudiger—7: Crucial with his box defending, but nearly lost concentration in the final minute of the game, overcommitting on a cross and leaving Retegui with a free shot on goal.

Fran Garcia—6: Did not get forward as often as he normally does but put in a defensive shift against Bellanova, Djimsiti, and Pasalic.

Dani Ceballos—8: Another strong performance in the middle of midfield. Constantly worked without the ball to close gaps. His defensive numbers stood out: won 7/11 ground duels, had 4 clearances, 8 recoveries (team high), 2 interceptions, 2 completed tackles, and was fouled 5 times, helping Madrid get out of pressure.

Fede Valverde—6: Sat the deepest of the midfielders and put in a disciplined tactical shift.

Brahim—8: Ran tirelessly all night long. Put in a massive defensive shift down the right flank. Missed a good opportunity inside the box after Atalanta’s goalkeeper parried a Vinicius cross right to the Moroccan’s feet.

Jude Bellingham—9: Made countless runs from his attacking midfield position to stretch the Atalanta backline. Dragged the Italian side’s man-marking scheme out of shape with his movement. Popped up in dangerous areas as a #10. Kept his goal-scoring streak alive with a brilliant piece of 1v1 play against De Roon, smashing his left-footed shot past the keeper. Once again, did a little bit of everything—offensively and defensively.

Vinicius Junior-8: The Brazilian made an early return from his injury and was immediately thrust into the lineup. His individual quality was a nightmare for Atalanta’s system. Found the back of the net with an astute one-touch finish inside the box after an errant pass deflected in his direction.

Kylian Mbappe—7: Scored a goal worthy of his world-class quality. One body movement and touch to deceive the defender and a clinical finish inside the box. Was substituted off with an injury in the first half.

Substitutions:

Rodrygo—6: Replaced Kylian Mbappe in the first half and did not look 100% fit. Rarely saw the Brazilian attempt an all-out sprint. Was played through by Bellingham in the second half, but his shot was directly at the keeper.

Luka Modric—5: Some misplaced passes late in the game led to Atalanta counterattacks against tired Madrid legs.

Raul Asencio—5: Played right back for the final 10 minutes of the game, pushing Lucas to right midfield. A few heavy touches with his limited involvement.

Arda Guler—N/A: 87th-minute substitution for Jude Bellingham.
