Shortly before 10 p.m. the day before, Bashar al-Assad discreetly set off for the airport, about twenty kilometers south of the capital, while the rebels were already surrounding what must have been the impregnable stronghold of a system out of breath.
Assad and his entourage are in a hurry to board a private plane. Who is fleeing with him? It is still difficult to say, precisely. Presumably his wife, Asma – a London-educated business lawyer who never criticized the atrocities committed by her husband -, their two children and his brother Maher, feared head of the IVe Division, the same one that was supposed to defend the People's Palace, on a hill above Damascus where Assad had his offices.
