‘The Smartest Person in the World’: Who is Hetty Helsmoortel and where do you know her from?

The end of the 22nd season of The Smartest Person in the World is in sight. Tonight it’s already time for the penultimate episode before the final weeks. In it we will meet Hetty Helsmoortel. This is where you know her from.

Hetty Helsmoortel

Hetty Helsmoortel is a scientist who you mainly know from the podcast Nerdland Monthly Review by Lieven Scheire. Hetty is a molecular biologist by training and a doctor in health sciences, and was a cancer researcher at Ghent University for eight years. She also studied drama at the RITCS in Brussels. She is one of the regular panel members of the podcast Nerdland Monthly Review by Lieven Scheire. Hetty also regularly explains science news and is a regular columnist for EOS Science.

In 2018, Hetty organized the science festival for the first time Sound of Science. She did this together with Toon Verlinden. After the corona pandemic, this festival was transformed into Nerdland Festival. Under this name it became a huge success. Both the edition in the provincial domain Puyenbroeck in Wachtebeke and the family festival for children from 8 years old, Nerdland for Little Nerdsin the Lotto Arena in Antwerp were a huge success.

Hetty has also written several books in which she wants to convey science in an understandable way. She made her first theater show at the end of 2021 Mission 2021. This is a scientific annual overview that has now been repeated every year. Mission 2024this year’s version, is largely sold out, but there are still some tickets available via the website.
