In Barcelona, the jewel of the club is and will forever remain its training center, La Masia, which has trained the greatest like Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Sergio Busquets. But for several years, through its various partners and academies, the Catalan management has been banking on Africa to unearth the greatest talents on the continent and has reportedly set its sights on a South African nugget. This is Relebohile Mofokeng, a 20-year-old striker who plays for Orlando Pirates, second in the South African championship. Involved in 14 goals in 22 games this season (6 goals and 8 assists), the small right-handed winger (1.61 m) is the delight of his club but also that of his country. His qualities of speed, technique and his ability to make the right decisions quickly in the zone of truth therefore caught the eye of Barcelona leaders.
A versatile profile tracked by other clubs?
To compensate for his small size, Mofokeng uses his agility and game intelligence to set opposing defenses on fire and can play as a winger or as a striker. A versatility which allowed him to deliver an assist and score his first goal in his second professional match during Orlando Pirates’ 4-0 victory against AmaZulu FC. On June 11, 2024, he discovered the national team by coming into play against Zimbabwe in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. But FC Barcelona will have to face competition from Premier League clubs and the Red Bull group, for that who was voted best young player of the season in the 2024 South African Premier League and best prospect in the 2024 Nedbank Cup, the equivalent of the Coupe de France.
