He is one of the timeless heroes of Formula 1, the messiah of all the Brazilian people. Ayrton Senna left his mark on a whole generation of racing drivers notably the seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton. His life, with its tragic destiny, continues to interest people and especially large companies, like Netflix. The video-on-demand subscription platform has decided to release a biopic series on the three-time Brazilian Formula 1 world champion. However, if the production is well appreciated by fans, it seems less so by the specialized press.

In France, the series did not benefit from unanimous treatment. On Allociné, it received a rating of 3.5/5 from 12 journalistic reviews. La Voix du Nord, on the other hand, gives it a perfect score and recommends viewing it if “'you are passionate about the world of motor racing competition”. For its part, 20 Minutes, Le Monde, Elle and Voici agreed on a 4/5. But some media do not have the same opinion at all. Le Journal du Dimanche delivers the lowest possible rating with a 1/5 : “'the man's initial gift for motor sports is little explored and the key stages of his career give the impression of being only skimmed over, explains the media”. Télérama gives a rating of 2/5 and does not mince its words. We can read “the credits last almost twelve minutes, which each time provides the pleasant surprise of seeing the episode end faster than expected”.

In the English-speaking media, the observation is even more alarming. On RottenTomatoes, Senna only gets a 43% from journalists. And the grades are very low for the most part. Epoch Times gives a poor 1.5/5 and says the series “steals its own show by opening on Senna's death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix”. Digital Mafia Talkies is more lenient on the rating with a 2/5, but much more direct on its criticism. “Stop making biographical dramas like Senna”, we can read. We only note a single 3/4 from the San Jose Mercury site which underlines “Gabriel Leone's magnetic performance to make up for much of that reluctance”.

Already a film in 2010

If the series is not unanimous among fans, Ayrton Senna can nevertheless always count on a biopic film released in 2010. Directed by Asif Kapadia, it traces the exceptional destiny of the Brazilian driver by talking about his achievements on and off the track. It gets a solid 4.3/5 from viewers on Allociné. The feature film is also available on Netflix.
