an LFI deputy causes an incident in the Assembly in full tribute to a deceased mayor

While Prime Minister Michel Barnier paid tribute to former MP René Couanau who died a few days ago, MP Élisa Martin caused an outcry by declaring “We don't care!”

“Out of respect, no controversy.” On the eve of the examination of the motion of censure, these are the questions to the government which were asked this Tuesday, December 3 in the National Assembly. While Michel Barnier was going to respond to that of GDR deputy André Chassaigne, he began by paying tribute to the former deputy of Ille-et-Vilaine and mayor of Saint-Malo René Couanau before another person intervened.

“We don’t care,” declared LFI MP Élisa Martin, according to the provisional report of the session published on the National Assembly website.

The sentence immediately provoked an uproar in the hemicycle and caused right-wing deputies to react: “what a scandal!”, “you are the shame of !” launch several parliamentarians in the direction of the LFI MP.

“Scandalous”

In the images from the National Assembly, Élise Martin is filmed making apologetic gestures towards the government. “I hear that we respect each other in this hemicycle, we are talking about the memory of a man who has just passed away, Madam Deputy, it is scandalous,” said the President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet, to the applause of a majority of deputies.

“Sorry, I didn’t understand,” replies Élise Martin, according to the provisional report of the session.

Michel Barnier then speaks again, asking “just respect and a little more calm, too. Mr. Chassaigne, I happen to think like you that this National Assembly has changed a lot…”

“Who can imagine being indifferent to the death of a human being?” wrote the LFI MP on X this Tuesday evening.

Referring to certain accusations on social networks, she specifies: “It was not Sophia Chikirou but me who spoke not to Mr. Barnier but to a colleague whom I thought was speaking to me, precisely to stay focused on the intervention.
