Philippe Gilbert comes up with a hopeful reflection after a new setback for Remco Evenepoel: “What if this produces freshness?”

Evenepoel sustained fractures in his right shoulder blade and right hand in an accident during training on Tuesday, in which he crashed into the door of a Bpost van. He also broke a rib. A tough verdict, although it is not yet clear how long Evenepoel will be sidelined as a result.

“Remco Evenepoel again to the ground after a collision with a post van!”, Gilbert responds as one of the first big names on social media. “The multiple fractures will take time and energy!” But… Gilbert changes his mind. “What if this setback provides extra freshness in the run-up to July next year?”

The Tour de is of course scheduled for July 2025. Evenepoel wants to participate there for the second time and do (even) better than when he finished third in his first participation this year.

Gilbert is a legend of Belgian cycling. He also knows Evenepoel well, because they rode together in the team at Quick-Step for a year in 2019. Gilbert and Evenepoel have always kept in touch since then.

Gilbert retired as a professional cyclist in 2022. Since then he has been involved in analyst and commentator work for Eurosport. From next season he will also become an analyst at the Walloon RTL Sports. He also wanted to become national coach of the Belgian male cyclists, but chose not to do so.
