Tom Waes stated in a message to VRT that he had drunk too much the evening of the traffic accident. “I should never have done that, there is no doubt about that,” he says. Images of a drunken Tom Waes are also circulating. For example, the above video was made by students on Friday evening in Antwerp South.
The public broadcaster, in turn, regrets the facts: “It is really not possible that Tom Waes got into a car drunk. Our screen faces also serve as an example for the general public in this regard. We expect Tom to take responsibility and think it is important that he shows self-insight.” The VRT also wishes Waes “the mental and physical strength for a speedy recovery”.

“I don’t remember anything about the accident or the circumstances that night in the Kennedy tunnel. The fact is that I went to a restaurant and café that evening and that I drank too much to be allowed to drive the car. Still, I got in my car to get home. Incomprehensible. I should never have done that, there is no doubt about that.”
“I realize that I have been very lucky. Lucky I didn’t cause any casualties. Lucky that I survived it myself. It’s a huge, incomprehensible mistake that makes me feel terrible. I would like to offer my sincere apologies to everyone. I’m terribly sorry.”
“I would like to thank all the nursing staff and the medical intervention team for the fantastic care given to me and my loved ones. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I have every confidence in the further course of the judicial investigation. Now I will fully focus on recovery and rehabilitation, and therefore I will not make any further statements in the press in the coming months until my management reports that I have regained sufficient mental and physical strength.”
