The Mandelieu-la-Napoule municipal police force is now equipped with four Tesla vehicles. Mayor Sébastien Leroy welcomes the planned energy savings and regrets that no French manufacturer responded to the call for tenders.
This is a first in France. The town of Mandelieu-la-Napoule has made four Tesla brand electric vehicles available to its municipal police officers.
In a press release sent this Monday, December 2, the municipality informs that the latter will be dedicated to “intra-urban surveillance patrols” of the “sixth municipal police force in France” in terms of number of agents per inhabitant.
No offers from French manufacturers
With the arrival of this new fleet of electric vehicles, Mayor Sébastien Leroy welcomes an “evolution in terms of innovative means at the cutting edge of technology”. It also highlights “the commitment of Tesla, a major economic player based in its territory”.

He assures that the purchase of these four vehicles will make it possible to achieve “energy and maintenance savings of 85%”. The director of Public Security, Pierre Boutillon, further detailed the reasons for this choice with our colleagues at Numerama.
“A municipal police car works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (…). We needed to reduce our emissions. There is also an economic reason: we are on 650 euros of fuel per month per vehicle Adopting electric vehicles will allow us to reduce this amount by 10,” he told the website.
An extended lifespan?
The latter hopes that the four vehicles will also have a longer lifespan than those with thermal engines, which are generally kept for five years. Municipal police officers will thus be encouraged to carry out slow recharges to preserve the quality of the batteries as much as possible.
Founded in 2003, Tesla is led by American billionaire Elon Musk, future minister of “government efficiency” under Donald Trump. During the 2010s, the brand experienced phenomenal development, becoming a major manufacturer in the automobile market, including in Europe, where the Model 3 established itself as one of the benchmark electric cars.
